May 2019 Newsletter

Our minutes were read and approved from the April meeting. Thank you Jane for taking them down each meeting for us.

Treasurer Gail updated us and said we would be receiving $560 as our share of the NYSSA raffle tickets. Thanks to Jack Rase who heads this up for us each year.

Gail and Tracy also brought home their notes from the recent NYSSA Forum. NYSSA will not be pursuing any further legislation in regard to antique sleds as it never gets anywhere. You can get a special event permit through Parks where you can ride your antique sled without having to register it.

They also relayed that Parks would prefer operators of groomers to be at least 18 years old and have a drivers license. Many had wondered if younger operators would be okay if they had machinery operating experience. NYSSA is also pushing for more young people to be involved in our sport. A young girl spoke at the forum on being part of our sport and the fun she’s had.

A big problem is NYS has led in sled fatalities for the 3rd year in a row. This has caught the attention of Albany and is certainly not good news for our sport. The majority of the incidences have happened in the Tug Hill region due to the large number of sledders who come to that area in the winter. This has generated a lot of bad publicity.

Parks also said there will be $1 million less in the trail fund due to lower sled registrations this past winter. I always emphasize this to everyone I speak to how important that we ALL register and join our club in the sport. Or we will ALL suffer the consequences when selectively participating.

NYSSA has created a new mapping application that we can interactively work with. Trail Coordinator Steve says it’s a work in progress that will get better. Steve also brought in an orange stake from Voss signs we will order when it’s bulk sign ordering time. They are more reasonable at $5 each. We are also looking to put a larger door in the groomer barn to facilitate moving wheelers in and out.

Jim Day only has 60 tickets left for our September Steak raffle so if you would like any please contact him. jimday@wentworthmotors.com
